Literature Text

It had been over a year since I had been taken away. From my friends, from my only family. Taken away only to be tortured endlessly. For the longest time I didn’t think it would have ended, that I would die in that cold dark cell with no one by my side. Apparently fate decided to be kind to me for once. Whether by making the locking mechanism on the door fail or keeping the halls clear as I snuck away, I would never know. Now I was on my way home. To my friends and to my family. I had missed them so much…

(One year before…)

“[Name] c’mon! We will be late!” A familiar voice called to me as I was trying to stuff my textbooks into my [F/C] backpack. “Hang on! My algebra book won’t fit!” I called down the hall to my friend Peter who had come to walk with me to school.

A figure appeared in the doorway and there Peter was with amusement all over his face. “Why not carry it?” He suggested with a small laugh. I glared at my best friend as I (Finally) stuffed my stupid algebra book into my overly small backpack. “I am not carrying that twenty pound book nine city blocks!” I said shaking my head with a frown which made Peter laugh all the more. “Oh come on, it isn’t all that heavy.” Peter said with a teasing smile. “You are only saying that because you downloaded all the books onto your laptop already.” I muttered as I shouldered my bag and brushed past Peter. “Maybe if you would actually download the books as well, you wouldn’t have to carry the textbooks everywhere.”

The overly smart teen remarked which earned him a playful shove. “Whatever. Come on, let me at least grab breakfast before we start walking.” I said with a roll of my eyes as we entered the elevator and rode to the top of the tower where I resided.

If you haven’t figured it out, yes, I do live in the Avengers Tower. Now before you go questioning why a normal human is living in the tower, let me first say Tony lives here and he just builds crap. Secondly, I am not normal nor have I ever been. You see, I have this unique ability where I am somewhat part dragon. I can make my wings and tails sprout whenever I want, my eyesight grows much sharper, and my skin develops scales wherever I want to help me be somewhat fireproof. Cool right?

A ding shook me from my thoughts as the elevator doors opened to reveal the Avengers main hang out. Otherwise known as the top floor of the Avengers tower. On the couch Clint was continuously changing the channel with a bored expression. At the far end of the couch Loki sat reading a book and blocking out the world around him, as always.

Peter and I moved to the kitchen where Thor was digging into a box of pop tarts, Steve was sitting reading the newspaper at the kitchen isle with a cup of coffee in hand, and Tony was currently making a new pot. “So where are Natasha and Bruce?” I questioned as I skipped in with a bright smile. Peter right behind me rolling his eyes at my antics.

Tony casually looked up and flashed that famous Stark smile at me. “Hm, I believe I saw the two walk off into a storage room closest somewhere.” He wiggled his eyebrows playfully and dodged a newspaper swat to the head by Steve.

“Bruce is down in the lab and Natasha left for a mission late last night.” The nations most beloved superhuman responded as he rolled his eyes at Tony. I grinned as Tony stuck his tongue out at the Captain. “Tell them I said goodbye for the day alright? School may just kill me this time!” A dramatic sigh left me as I sprouted my tail and grabbed two apples with it. Tossing one to Peter I began to chow down on my own.

“Will do kid.” Steve smiled at me and I gave him a quick hug. “What, no hug for me?” Tony pouted until I walked over and hugged him too. He gave a gentle smile. “Have a great day kiddo.” He whispered so no one else would hear but me. “Of course Tony.” I winked and moved to give Thor a quick hug which made the god of thunder look at me with half a pop-tart hanging from his mouth. Before he could return it and crush the life out of me, I skipped from the room with Peter right behind me.

I couldn’t leave until I gave Clint and Loki a hug each. So I moved to Loki first, who was distracted by his book, and wrapped my arms around his neck playfully. Of course it didn’t hurt him since he was a freaking god. Instead he just chuckled and reached a hand up to ruffle my hair, eyes not leaving the book once. Damn he was good.

Next was Clint who was waiting to receive my hug. He gave me a kiss on my forehead then let me go. “See you after school [Name], remember we have that rematch at Mario Kart.” He teased which I smirked at. “Oh it is so on Legolas.” I winked which he laughed at as I entered the elevator with Peter by my side.

How I wish I knew I wouldn’t be coming back for a long time. I should have said goodbye to Bruce before I left….

“FREEDOM!” I screeched as I burst forth from my algebra class. Many other students around me shot me weird looks or just laughed at my excitement. But I didn’t care about them in the slightest. Finally I could go back to the tower and relax for two whole days! Thank god for weekends!
I quickly rushed to my locker and grabbed my small [F/C] backpack and emptied it of everything I didn’t need for the weekend. When I was satisfied with my load I turned and began to head for the doors leading out of the school.

“Hey [Name]!” Peter called out behind me. I turned to look as he rushed up beside me. “Me and the guys are going to hang out at Central Park for a while. Want to join?” He asked with a lopsided grin. “Nah, I have to skip hanging out today Pete. Remember, I have to kick Hawkeyes butt at Mario Kart again.” I said with a lopsided grin which made Peter chuckle and nod. “Of course. You take his butt down. Call me once you’re done, okay?” He questioned softly which made me nod as well.

“Of course Pete. I’ll call you as soon as I take him down.” Then we went our separate ways.

I should have taken his offer and gone with him…. I should have just accepted…..

I blew out a huge sigh as I continued to walk down the quiet street. After school ended I had decided to go visit my friend Jerry, who owned an auto mechanics shop near the school. While helping him tune up an old motorcycle I lost track of time and didn’t realize how dark it had gotten. So as not to worry the Avengers I sent Tony a quick text explaining why I was going to be late.

So here I was walking down an empty street, as a sort of short cut to get back to the tower in time. I could see the glow from the Avengers tower, seeming almost as bright as the moon ahead. The sight made me chuckle. Tony always had to outdo everyone, especially in the city that never sleeps.
“HELP!” The cry echoed down the silent street and made the air turn cold. I stopped dead in my tracks and listened intensely. Someone was in trouble. Quickly I spread my wings and took off into the sky to try and find the source of the cry for help. “HELP!” The scared voice called again from a nearby alleyway and with quick thinking I curved my wings and landed on the outskirts of the alleyway. My eyes lit up and I scanned the darkness around me as I dove deeper into the shadows.
“Hello? Is anyone there?” I called softly still searching for who had cried out for help. “Please! Help me!” The voice called again, right in front of me. Confusion filled me before I looked down and saw a small device. A stereo?

“Help me please!” The voice came from the little machine. I crouched down and picked it up. Why would someone leave a stereo in an alleyway? Also, why did it have a recording of someone calling for help on it?

I realized what it was far too late it seems. Green gas shot out from the top of the machine right into my face. I dropped it and began to cough as I waved away the smoke. “What was that?!” I coughed out as I blinked to clear my eyes. “That, my dear, was our little trap springing.” A dark voice said behind me which made me freeze in utter fear.

With watery eyes I turned to try and see my attacker, if I could call him that. All I could make out was a large burly dark shape towering over me. “W-Who are you?” I asked as my vision started to grow black dots and I felt dizzy.

“You’ll find out soon enough girly.” He chuckled before I began to fall forward. The last thing I remember before I fell into darkness was truck lights brightening up the alleyway, and my phone going off. It was Tony’s ringtone, Shoot to Thrill.
Then I fell into complete and total darkness.

That was the start of my year in hell. They nearly starved me on seven different accounts. Dehydrated me as often as possible. Beat me for information or just for sick pleasure if they were bored. I was always in constant pain. Left in a dark cell with only a sliding steel door keeping me locked in.

I became sickly, dangerously thin, and all my dreams turned to nightmares. For a few weeks I even forgot about my old life. Who I used to be, who was a part of my life. All of it.

Then came my saving grace. Something had happened to make the door holding me in short out and open. At first I thought it to be a trick, a test to see if I would run. But when no one came in to laugh at my pitiful state I got up and peeked outside. The halls were empty.

I didn’t question it. Instead I took this opportunity to take off down the hall, twisting and turning down more corridors as I ran. That is when I saw it, my saving grace. The door that lead to the outside world. With a happy cry I had burst through the doors with strength I thought I had lost and was welcomed with blinding sunlight. The heat of the sun on my skin and the gentle breezes around me made me laugh in pure delight. My wings stretched out widely behind me, a feeling I have long forgotten, and took flight for the first time in so long.

I let the wind guide me far away from my hellish prison, to freedom. I flew for longs hours before crash landing into a small town. An elderly woman had found me and took me in. Fed me, bandaged my wounds, and took care of me. Being cared for, looked after, was something I missed just as much.
That first night with the old woman I had burst into tears once she fell asleep. I was FREE. I could finally go home. Back to New York and back to my family. They must have missed me so much…..
I had to stay with the elderly woman for around three weeks before I was healthy enough to leave. She gave me fresh clothes, some food, a back pack, and money in case I needed to stop at a motel or something for the night. I thanked her for her kindness. How could I ever repay her?

The next morning I took off high into the sky. That night I looked over a map and saw I was three days out from New York. If I flew all day and maybe most of the night, I could make it their within a few hours. So I flew, all day in the direction of my home. Traveling by my own wings was much faster than any car or plane.

Two hours after the sun had set and only the stars and moon were out I saw it. The bright gleaming lights of New York shining like a beacon of hope. I nearly started sobbing. I was almost home…
As I landed on the outskirts of New York, I took the time to fix my appearance as best I could. My hair was slowly getting its healthy shine back, I was still thin but not as bad as a few weeks ago. My skin was still very much pale but my eyes were starting to fill with life again. I shifted the jacket the elderly woman had given me tighter to my body and began to move into the city. It wasn’t long before I saw the most beautiful building in the world shining as brightly as ever.

Avengers Tower.

My home.

I took in a deep shaky breath and moved closer to the building. When I saw the front lobby I faltered. What if the lady at the front desk didn’t let me pass? But when I took a closer look I noticed she wasn’t even at her post. Perfect. Quickly I rushed into the building and right for the elevator. I pressed the button to the top most floor.

“Authorization code, please miss.”

My breath hitched as the accented robotic voice entered the PA system of the elevator. It was JARVIS. Oh how I have missed his voice.

“Authorization code, Oceanic Spire. [Name]” I said shakily to the AI. Every one of the Avengers had their own specific authorization code. “Miss [L/N].” If an AI could sound shocked, then JARVIS just pulled it off. “Hey Jar… It’s me…. Don’t tell the others it’s me.. I wanna surprise them… They all on the top floor?” I asked as my nerves started to get to me.

“Of course miss [L/N]. All of the Avengers are gathered within the main room.” JARVIS said before going silent. I watched the numbers ascend the higher we got. Only a few floors to go. My stomach twisted into knots as I closed my eyes. I was so scared of what could happen. Would they be happy to see me? I was surely going to be happy to see them. I had missed them all so much.

It wasn’t long before the elevator doors opened silently and revealed the main room where all the Avengers hung out when all were together.

My breath hitched as I saw all of the Avengers sitting on the couches, watching a movie. The movie was in fact my favorite movie, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It was near the end where Frodo was saying goodbye to the other Hobbits as he left with Gandalf and the elves. My favorite part of the movie.

With a small gulp I walked over to where they were and watched silently from behind. Nobody noticed me, too entranced by the movie. They all had distant looks in their eyes full of grief and despair. Finally as Frodo went to hug Sam I spoke up.

“That part always got to me….” I mumbled in a shaky voice.

Seven heads swiveled around to stare at me and seven pairs of eyes widened.

“[N-Name?]” Steve asked as he got up and walked towards me putting a hand on my shoulder to see if I was real or not. “Hey Cap…” I said with a weak smile. Then my resolve crumpled and I latched on to the blonde and began to cry. Steve wrapped his arms around me and began to cry as well. He guided me to the couch where we both sat down and more arms wrapped around me.

“I-I’ve missed you a-all so much…” I sobbed loudly as I buried my face into Steve’s clothes. The sounds of crying filled the room before everyone was able to calm down and get ahold of their emotions. Everyone sat in a tight circle around me. I was still holding on to Steve with Tony right next to him. To my left were Bruce, Natasha, and Clint. Thor and Loki crouched on the floor in front of me. All of them wanting to be as close to me as possible.

“Kid…. What happened to you? Where have you been for the past year?” Tony finally broke the silence as he looked at me with concern. I sniffled and looked up at the genius billionaire. Then I looked at all the other avengers gathered around me, wanting to know what had befallen me just as much.

And so I told them.

I told them of my time captive by an unknown enemy.

How they tried to get information from me, tortured me and almost killed me in a handful of situations. Everyone had a different range of emotion on their face. Anger, disbelief, concern, and grief. They all felt responsible for not being there to protect me.

“[Name]…. This shouldn’t have happened to you… I should have come to pick you up from school that day or something…” Tony said lowering his head in shame. Before I could put a word in Thor spoke up. “Let us find these men of shadows and show them what happens when they dare touch Lady [Name].” Bruce and Loki looked to be on agreement with the god of thunder. “I can have Fury track them down and find their hide out.” Natasha said with murder in her eyes.

“Guys stop.” I said ending their discussion on what to do with my excaptors. “I got away from them, and I am here. You don’t need to go after them.” My voice was soft and my eyes tired. “But [Name], they tortured you for a year! Kept you captive and almost killed you! How could you let this go?” Clint said mirroring the shock everyone else had on their faces.

“I am angry at them, yes. But what would it accomplish to go there and destroy them? I am here now. They won’t try coming for me again seeing as I am back here.” Everyone was silent as they looked at me in disbelief. “I say let them live. Because then they will live in fear. Knowing that the Avengers will find them and kill them if they ever show their ugly mugs again.” I finished which made the Avengers give soft chuckles.

“Now that’s the [Name] we know and love.” Tony said with a wide smile. I gave a bright smile back. Finally I was home. “How about we have a movie marathon with plenty of junk food to celebrate your return?” Tony suggested which made Steve and Bruce scowl. But Clint and Thor were on the same page. “We shall have a feast with the tarts of pop!” The blonde god declared with a wide smile. Natasha had already moved to gather all my favorite movies. “I’ll go get blankets and pillows.” Bruce chuckled as he got up as well.

“Come on Point Break, you too Reindeer Games. We will make the snacks!” Tony grabbed both gods and headed for the kitchen. Loki protested the entire time, but didn’t pull away. He was happy at my return and didn’t mind helping actually.

“It’s good to have you back [Name].” Steve said as he put a hand to my shoulder. I looked up at him and smiled. “Good to be back Steve….”

And it truly was. I was finally home with my true family. Nothing could ever keep us apart.

“Clint, you still owe me a rematch at Mario Kart.”

“Oh it’s so on! You are so totally going to lose!”

“Yep… Really good to have you back…”
Yes so here is my first work of literature for DeviantArt..... CURSE YOU! Finally I have been able to move past the weird writers block I have! :happybounce:

So here you have this little thing I came up with a while ago. It's not as good as I would like. But at least it's something. No matter how much it bugs me.

Sadly I do not own the Avengers! (Because if I did Tony would be my personal stripper and Loki would be my hair stylist... Yay! Eddsworld ) And I do not own the Reader. Lucky you!Me gusta

So please don't kill me with how bad this is.... I just lose inspiration at times and things end up crappy... Oh well... Here y'all go! If you don't exist If you don't exist Raver Kitty Icon
